Airlines increase airfares as operating costs rise

The cost of air tickets along several routes have doubled due to the high demand for air travel in light of the rising insecurity in the country and cost of flight operations.

The increase in the air tickets has caused complainants as travellers lament how they had to part with large sums of money to purchase tickets.

Some of the airlines complained that they could not access foreign exchange at the official rate while the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria had increased its fees.

It was gathered that, airlines are paying VAT at 7.5 per cent. There is also a 15 per cent duty on spare parts, while boarding passes is also had 15 per cent duty on it.

It is also said that passenger service charge has also been increased by FAAN, so these are reasons for the increase in air fares cost.

A check on Friday on the website of one of the airlines showed that a one-way ticket from Maiduguri to Lagos for Saturday was put at N100,000 which shows that it has been increased by N30,000.

A flight from Lagos now range from N80,000 to N100,000.
