Rivers Governor Fubara Defects to APC, Dumps PDP After Prolonged Political Crisis

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), ending months of intense political tension in the state. The announcement was made on Tuesday at a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

Governor Fubara said joining the APC became necessary to ensure stable governance, strengthen his partnership with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and align the state with the federal government. According to him, remaining in the PDP while supporting the President amounted to giving “backyard support.”

The governor also accused the PDP of failing to protect him during the long-running political crisis that rocked Rivers State, especially the confrontation involving the House of Assembly and key political actors.

Fubara’s defection follows a series of recent moves by several Rivers lawmakers who also dumped the PDP for the APC, signaling a major realignment of political forces in the oil-rich state.

Political analysts say Fubara’s move will significantly boost the APC’s presence in the South-South region and may influence future elections, governance dynamics, and federal-state relations in Rivers State.

The development has continued to generate reactions across the country, with supporters and opposition figures expressing mixed views on the governor’s decision.
