The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has recovered and handed over ₦1.234 billion from Sujimoto Luxury Construction Limited to the Enugu State Government over a breached contract for the construction of 22 smart schools in the state.
The funds were officially handed over on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, following investigations initiated after a petition was submitted to the Commission in February 2025. The petition alleged that Sujimoto received an advance payment of ₦2.29 billion for the project but failed to deliver the schools within the agreed timeline, which expired on January 2, 2025.
According to the EFCC, investigations revealed persistent non-performance and diversion of project funds, prompting the recovery of ₦1.23 billion so far. The Group Managing Director of the company, Dr. Olasijibomi Ogundele, was also found to be jointly liable for the refund.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Enugu Zonal Director of the EFCC, Chief Superintendent of the EFCC (CSE) Daniel Isei, who represented the Commission’s Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, said the recovery underscores the agency’s commitment to safeguarding public funds and ensuring restitution in cases of economic and financial crimes.
Isei warned contractors handling public projects to strictly adhere to procurement and contractual obligations, stressing that the EFCC would pursue full recovery of all outstanding funds and proceed with prosecution wherever criminal liability is established.
Receiving the recovered sum on behalf of the Enugu State Government, the state’s representative, Onyia, praised the EFCC for its professionalism and diligence, describing the recovery as a testament to transparency, accountability, and effective collaboration between government institutions.
