Delta ‘Rape Festival’: Police Arrest Organiser, Four Others Over Assault of Women in Ozoro

Public outrage has erupted over a controversial festival in Delta State after viral videos showed women being assaulted during the event in Oruamudhu community, Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area.

The disturbing footage, widely shared online, captured young women being chased, stripped, and groped by groups of men in broad daylight, sparking nationwide condemnation.

The incidents reportedly occurred during the ‘Alue-Do’ festival held on March 19, a traditional rite said to be linked to fertility practices in the community.

Witnesses said the event includes restrictions requiring women to remain indoors during specific hours, with those found outside allegedly subjected to harassment.

Several clips showed victims in distress, including a woman dragged from a motorcycle and assaulted, while others were seen trying to shield themselves from mobs. The exact number of victims remains unconfirmed.

The development has drawn criticism from Nigerians, many of whom described the event as a “rape festival” and called for urgent action to protect women and hold perpetrators accountable.

Concerns were also raised over warnings circulated among students of Southern Delta University, Ozoro, advising female students to stay indoors during the festival.

Confirming police action, Delta State Police Command spokesperson, Bright Edafe, said the community head and chief organiser, Omorede Sunday, alongside four others, had been arrested.

He added that the Commissioner of Police has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to the State Criminal Investigation Department, assuring that all those involved will face justice.
