The Delta State Police Command has arrested a woman identified as Rita Ughale, a resident of Kokori community in Ethiope East Local Government Area, over the alleged sale of a newborn baby for ₦1.5 million.
According to police sources, Ughale was apprehended following intelligence reports that led operatives to uncover a suspected child-trafficking deal involving the infant. The baby was reportedly sold shortly after birth under circumstances that raised serious concerns.
The police confirmed that the child has since been rescued and placed in protective custody, while investigations are ongoing to identify other individuals who may have been involved in the transaction, including the alleged buyers and any middlemen.
The Delta State Police Command reiterated its commitment to combating child trafficking and illegal adoption syndicates, warning that offenders would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The suspect is expected to be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
