Defence Headquarters Denies Coup Rumours Against President Tinubu

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed reports circulating in sections of the media alleging a plot by some military officers to overthrow President Bola Tinubu.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the DHQ described the claims as “false, baseless, and a deliberate attempt to cause panic and undermine national stability.”

The military high command stated that contrary to the rumours, there was no coup attempt and no plan to subvert the constitutional government. It added that the Nigerian Armed Forces remain loyal to the Constitution and to President Tinubu as Commander-in-Chief.

The statement further clarified that the ongoing investigation involving a number of military officers was a routine disciplinary process and not connected to any alleged plot.

“The public is advised to disregard these unfounded stories being spread to create tension in the polity,” the DHQ said.

It also explained that the decision to cancel the parade marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary was not related to any security threat but due to the President’s tight international schedule.

While reaffirming its commitment to democracy, the DHQ warned those behind the rumour campaign to desist from spreading falsehood capable of destabilising the nation.
