Bayelsa State was thrown into mourning on Thursday following the sudden death of Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Oborawharievwo Ewhrudjakpo, who reportedly slumped during official duties at the Government House, Yenagoa.
Ewhrudjakpo, 60, was said to have collapsed in his office and was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, where doctors confirmed him dead on arrival.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and senior government officials have since confirmed the tragic development, describing it as a shocking and painful loss to the state and the nation. Flags were lowered at half-mast across government offices as tributes continued to pour in.
Born on September 5, 1965, in Sagbama Local Government Area, Ewhrudjakpo served as Deputy Governor from 2020 and was previously Senator for Bayelsa West as well as Commissioner for Works.
His death comes as a major blow to the administration of Governor Douye Diri, with many praising Ewhrudjakpo’s years of dedicated public service and loyalty to the state.
