An 87-year-old man, identified as Dahiru Garba, has been remanded in custody after allegedly attacking an Area Court judge with a cutlass during court proceedings in Adamawa State.
Garba was arraigned before the Chief Magistrate Court I in Yola over the alleged attack on the presiding judge of Mayo-Ine Area Court, Hon. Dauda Hamman.
According to the police, the incident occurred on August 31, 2026, while the judge was presiding over a case involving Garba and another man, identified as Ismail Yusuf.
The police alleged that Garba suddenly attacked the judge with a cutlass and repeatedly struck his hand, inflicting grievous injuries.
Garba was subsequently arrested and charged with causing grievous hurt under Section 219 of the Adamawa State Penal Code Law, 2018.
During his arraignment, the 87-year-old reportedly pleaded guilty to the charge and was said to have attributed his action to the devil.
Following the proceedings, the court ordered that Garba be remanded at the Yola Correctional Centre pending further proceedings.
The unusual incident has attracted attention because of the age of the accused and the fact that the alleged attack occurred inside a courtroom while the judge was conducting official proceedings.
Police authorities said investigations into the incident are ongoing.
