President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Amupitan, a distinguished Professor of Law at the University of Jos, replaces Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure ended earlier this month after serving two consecutive terms as head of the electoral body.
The appointment, which was ratified by the National Council of State, has been forwarded to the Senate for screening and confirmation, in line with constitutional provisions.
Until his appointment, Amupitan was a lecturer and legal scholar widely respected for his work in constitutional law and governance reforms. He is also a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and has served in various academic and professional capacities.
May Agbamuche-Mbu, the INEC National Commissioner representing Delta, Edo, and Cross River States, had been overseeing the commission in an acting capacity pending the appointment of a substantive chairman.
