TikTok Removes Over 3.6 Million Videos in Nigeria

Popular social media platform TikTok has removed more than 3.6 million videos uploaded from Nigeria over violations of its community guidelines, the company revealed in its latest Community Guidelines Enforcement Report.

The figure, which covers the period from January to March 2025, represents one of the highest volumes of content takedowns in Africa, highlighting the platform’s ongoing struggle with harmful, misleading, or inappropriate content in the country.

According to TikTok, the removals were carried out for a range of offenses including hate speech, misinformation, harassment, nudity, violent extremism, and child endangerment.

“Out of the total 3,659,900 videos taken down from Nigeria, a significant portion was removed before they were viewed by anyone, demonstrating the effectiveness of our proactive detection systems,” the report noted.

Globally, TikTok said it removed over 166 million videos within the same period, with Nigeria accounting for over 2% of the total enforcement actions worldwide.

The company stressed that it uses a mix of automated technology, content moderation teams, and community reporting to detect and remove videos that violate its rules.

Digital rights advocates in Nigeria say while the move indicates TikTok’s commitment to curbing harmful content, they have also called for more transparency and localized moderation to ensure fair enforcement that respects cultural contexts and free expression.

Nigeria has one of the fastest-growing TikTok user bases in Africa, with millions of young people using the platform for entertainment, education, and activism. However, this rapid growth has also attracted concerns over misuse and abuse.

TikTok says it remains committed to maintaining a safe and inclusive environment, and continues to invest in moderation tools, media literacy initiatives, and partnerships with local organizations.

The company also encourages users to report harmful content directly through the app as part of its broader efforts to protect the community.
