Atiku, Obi, Mark, and Political Heavyweights Launch ADC Coalition in Abuja for 2027

In a significant political development ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Senate President David Mark have officially launched a new opposition coalition under the banner of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The unveiling ceremony took place at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, signaling a united front to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) led by President Bola Tinubu.

The coalition, which also includes former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and other prominent political figures, aims to provide Nigerians with a credible alternative to the current administration. David Mark, who has been appointed as the interim national chairman of the ADC, emphasized that the coalition’s mission extends beyond the pursuit of political power. He stated, “This is a concerted effort to rebuild the crumbling pillars of Nigeria’s democracy.”

The ADC coalition has adopted the party as its primary platform, with plans to restructure and strengthen its leadership. Former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has been named interim national secretary of the coalition. The leadership changes mark the culmination of an 18-month coalition-building process, during which discussions were held with various political stakeholders.

Peter Obi, in his address, proposed a single-term presidency if elected, aiming to respect Nigeria’s unwritten power-sharing and zoning agreements. He believes that a four-year term is sufficient to implement impactful governance and ensure regional balance in leadership.

The formation of this coalition is seen as a response to concerns over the current administration’s approach to governance, including allegations of attempts to consolidate power and weaken democratic institutions. Critics argue that the ruling APC’s actions have led to a shrinking democratic space, prompting opposition leaders to unite in defense of Nigeria’s democracy.

As the 2027 elections approach, the ADC coalition’s ability to present a unified and coherent policy agenda will be crucial in determining its success in challenging the APC’s dominance in Nigerian politics.
