Ondo 2020: SDP crumbles as chieftains abandon party for APC, PDP

As the Ondo State gubernatorial election draws near, the real political players and jokers are being identified in the race for the governorship seat.

Political experts that predicted that it’s going to be a two horse race between the incumbent, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of the All Peoples’ Congress, APC and the Peoples’ Democratic Party ((PDP) candidate, Prof. Eyitayo Jegede were not wrong after all.

In less than a week to election, the party chairman of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, Mr. Dele Ogunbameru, led the chairmen of 10 other political parties to announce their support for the candidate of the PDP, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede.

Perhaps, not wanting to be seen as a political orphan, or remain in the political wilderness alone, the candidate of the SDP candidate, Mr. Peter Fasua, quickly withdrew from the race and declared his support for the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

This came few hours after his party went alongside other political parties to support the PDP candidate, Jegede.

While announcing his withdrawal from the race, Fasua said, “I decided to step down and support Governor Akeredolu of the APC. I am convinced that my own desires and plans for Ondo State will be achieved totally by Governor Akeredolu.”

What shocked many pundits is that, Fasua’s running mate in the SDP, Mrs.Rachel Ajayi said she has joined the PDP like her colleagues because the party decision to her, is supreme.

She said, “I am a party person and I queue behind any position taken by my party and its leadership. The party has decided to support the Peoples Democratic Party as relayed by our state Chairman, Prince Dele Ogunbameru, and that is okay by me.”

She however added that, it is obvious that the former SDP candidate, Peter Fasua is not prepared for this election and he has always been acting as a mole.”
